Composition:
Each
capsule contains
Azithromycin ........................ 250 mg
or 600 mg
Each 5 ml of reconstituted suspension
contains
Azithromycin ........................ 200 mg
Properties:
Azithromycin is an azalide,
a subclass of macrolide antibiotics and is
derived from erythromycin. Azithromycin acts
by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of
susceptible microorganisms and thus
interfering with microbial protein synthesis
and preventing translocation of peptides.
Azithromycin has been shown to be active
against the following microorganisms:
Staphylococcus aureus,
Streptococcus
pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes,
Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella
catarrhalis & Chlamydia trachomatis.
Azithromycin is rapidly absorbed and widely
distributed throughout the body, with tissue
concentrations greater than those in plasma.
Tissue depletion half-life is 2 - 4 days.
Biliary excretion of Azithromycin is a major
route of elimination. Over the course of a
week 6% of the dose appears in urine.
Indications:
► Upper
respiratory tract infections, pharyngitis,
tonsillitis.
► Lower
respiratory tract infections as
bronchitis &
pneumonia.
► Skin
& soft tissue infections.
► Otitis
media.
► Sexually
transmitted diseases due to Chlamydia
trachomatis & Neisseria gonorrhea.
► Urethritis &
cervicitis.
Contraindications:
Azithro-Sed is contraindicated in patients
with hypersensitivity to the drug.
Warnings :Azithro-Sed should be used
with caution in patients with significant
liver disease.
Drug Interaction:
Concomitant use of antacids
with Azithro-Sed reduced serum concentration
of Azithromycin by 30% .
Concomitant use of Azithro-Sed and digoxin
may raise digoxin levels. This possibility
should be taken into consideration.
Use during pregnancy
and lactation
Azithro-Sed should only be
used where altematives are not available .
Dosage & route of
administration & duration:
Each dose should be taken 1
hour before meals or 2 hours after meals.
In adults :For sexually transmitted
diseases: 1-1.2 g (as a single dose(For
other Indications: 500-600 mg daily (for 3
days)

Adverse
effects:
Side effects are transient.
They include gastrointestinal disturbances,
vomiting. constipation and flatulence
.Hearing impairment, allergic reactions,
asthenia and elevated liver enzymes have
been rarely reported.
